Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer (1881-1966) was one of the most important Dutch mathematicians. Shortly after the death of Brouwer, the KWG, together with the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences, the Brouwer Prize established.

Once every three years, the KWG identifies a sub-area of mathematics and then a special committee selects an international leading researcher in that area. The latter is invited to give a lecture on his or her subject area during the next Dutch Mathematical Congress, accessible to a general mathematical hearing. Afterwards, the laureate de Brouwermedaille is awarded with a certificate. The medal enjoys a great international prestige.
