Save the date: KWG Math & AI day — Utrecht 23/10/2026

In the past months, a number of open mathematical problems have been solved by Large Language Models (LLMs), including the unit distance problem and the Jacobian conjecture. More broadly, the number of papers on arXiv where some input is attributed to AI is rapidly increasing, as many mathematicians have begun using these tools to do research. At the same time, many call for caution and ask themselves whether it is possible to make responsible and transparent use of these tools. What will mathematical education look like in an age of widespread AI use? How do we value authorship and intellectual contribution for works that make use of AI? To what extent could proof-assistants address concerns about AI slop? What about the many ecological and economic ramifications, like energy and water use of datacentres, or the potential future dependence of mathematical research on private AI companies.

All signs seem to indicate that AI will be a disruptive force that will change how we do mathematics. The aim of this meeting is to bring together mathematicians to discuss these recent developments from a broad range of perspectives.
