for the best presentation of PhD research in mathematics

Each year the Royal Mathematical Society (KWG) organizes the KWG PhD Prize for the best presentation of PhD research in math. The competition for the promotional prize is open to PhD students in mathematics at all universities in the Netherlands and the CWI, provided their promotion date is after 28 February 2026.

A jury of mathematicians from different disciplines selects a winner, who furthermore receives a change trophy and a cash prize. Previous winners are listed on the exchange trophy.

Procedure

To participate in the competition, you must:

1. send a comprehensive abstract (up to two pages) and a short CV (up to one page) to the following email address: m.kranenburg@tue.nl (use "KWG PhD Prize" as subject);
2. ask your daily supervisor to send a brief letter of recommendation to the same address (m.kranenburg@tue.nl).

The deadline for entries is Tuesday 31 March 2026.

The jury will review the submissions and compile a shortlist of four candidates. These candidates are invited to give a presentation of 10 minutes (+ 5 minutes for discussion) during the KWG afternoon on 8 May 2026 in Amsterdam. From these four invited candidates, the jury will select the prize winner. The main criterion for invitation is the quality of the PhD research; The main criterion for winning the prize is the ability to present the research to a broad mathematical audience. A PhD candidate must be advanced in her/his research (third/fourth year) to have a good chance to be invited.
