The KWG Wintersymposium 2027
19 October 2026
On Saturday 9 January 2027 the KWG Wintersymposium will be held, with this year's theme Emergence.
Emergence is the phenomenon in which interactions create new patterns and properties on a higher scale. Often it is described as the idea that the whole is more than the sum of the parts. But is it? Or does a higher level of scale give a simpler picture of reality?
The four lectures show how mathematics helps to understand emergence. We discover how random movements of particles on a larger scale can lead to predictable patterns, and how the irreversibility of natural processes can arise from physical laws that are reversible at microscopic level. Even black holes can be simulated on Earth, thanks to emergence.
Curious how that works? Registration for the Wintersymposium is now open!
The KWG Wintersymposium 2027 is organised with the support of researchers from the Emergency at All Scales (EAAS) consortium and the Dutch Institute for Emergent Phenomena (DIEP).
